JP is BJP's new Emergency hero: Party prepares to mark the movement's 40th anniversary in grand style
Jayaprakash Narayan, known as JP or Lok Nayak, was an independence activist and social reformer
After trying to appropriate Sardar Patel from the Congress and snatch BR Ambedkar’s legacy from political parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party is now set to further capture the political space associated with the socialists ahead of the crucial Bihar and UP polls.
The party is preparing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975 on June 25.
A high-profile programme is scheduled to be held on the day at the Mavalankar Hall in New Delhi, and the significance of the event could be assessed from the fact that party president Amit Shah will be in Chair.
National organising general secretary of the party Ram Lal will be the special guest at the gathering, which is expected to draw huge media as well as popular participation.
The highlight of the programme will be those activists who had been jailed and tortured during the Emergency when civil liberties were suspended under the Indira regime and the press was gagged.
The event has been organised under the ‘Aapatkaal Bandi Smaran Samiti’ from all across India. While the party has been organising a commemorative ceremony every year since Emergency, this time around the programme has been planned on a grand scale.
"This event has been organised in order to remember those who either laid their lives in the service of democracy in India or those who were jailed and tortured under the repressive Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). The Jan Sangh has a glorious history during the 21-month Emergency period that was the black chapter of the history of Indian democracy.
"It is also a reminder to the people of India that the Congress is a party that has always been interested in power rather than the people of the country and democracy,” said the head of the Samiti, Mahesh Sharma.

Sharma added that over 150 MISA victims and another 350 other victims of the Emergency who were either jailed for lesser periods or victimised otherwise would be attending the event where they would be felicitated.
“The programme this time around has been organised on a grand scale and for this reason it is taking place under the aegis of the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation. Also, we will be remembering Dr Mookerjee at the ceremony,” said Sharma, who has been the organising force for the past 15 years.
Meanwhile, Executive Editor of BJP’s mouthpiece Kamal Sandesh, Dr Shiv Shakti Nath Bakshi, took a dig at the socialist troika of Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, though without naming them.
“Look at what has happened to the leading socialist leaders of the country who have long been claiming the legacy of the movement of Jayaprakash Narayan or the JP movement that took anti-Congressism of the country to a crescendo and carved space for non-Congress politics. They started as pupils of JP and now they have become the stooges of the same Congress that added the black chapter to India’s history.”
“On the contrary, the Jan Sangh, RSS and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad have a glorious past to boast about when it comes to Emergency. What more, the Jan Sangh even merged its identity with the Janata Party to strengthen democracy in the country. We have the same political stand even now as it was then, unlike others who have chosen to exploit the name of JP and his legacy to garner votes. People can see it and such divisive politics will be punished,” he added.
Battle of barbs in Bihar raises poll fever
By Giridhar Jha in Patna
Bihar politicians are spicing up the poll season by taking to mythologies. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar chose to refer to his predecessor, Jitan Ram Manjhi, as Vibhishan, a mythical character in the Ramayana, accusing him of being a great betrayer.
But Manjhi returned the compliment by likening him to Ravan, the demon king of Lanka in the epic, who was the elder brother of Vibhishan.
“I feel honoured that Nitish has called me Vibhishan,” Manjhi said in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday.
“But if I am Vibhishan, Nitish is surely Ravan who was known for his tyranny and arrogance.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar (right) chose to refer to his predecessor, Jitan Ram Manjhi (left), as Vibhishan, a mythical character in the Ramayana, accusing him of being a great betrayer.
The Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader said he was happy that he was likened to someone who had sided with Lord Ram.
“I will also be instrumental for the fall of Ravan’s Lanka in Bihar,” he said.
Manjhi, who was removed by Nitish as the CM, said Vibhishan was a noble character who had joined Lord Ram’s army after his brother refused to listen to his advice to return the abducted Sita.
Referring to Manjhi who was nominated as the CM by him last year before he raised a banner of revolt against him, Nitish had earlier said the people of this country had never forgiven the betrayers.
The Janata Dal (United) leader said the people refrained from naming their children as Vibhishan even today, alluding to the role played by him in the Ramayana in which he had helped Lord Rama against his elder brother.
The battle of barbs gave an opportunity to the BJP to fire similar salvos at Nitish.
“If Manjhi is Vibhishan, Nitish should spell out as to who is Ravan?” asked senior party leader Sushil Kumar Modi.
The former deputy CM said Nitish’s remarks against Manjhi had made it clear that he considered the BJP to be the “Ram Rajya” (epitome of good governance).
remy hair extensionsSenior BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav said Nitish was referring to Manjhi as Vibhishan but he should tell as to who was the Vibhishan of the NDA?
“Who had betrayed the people of Bihar by going against their mandate?” he asked, referring to Nitish’s decision to sever his 17-year-old ties with the BJP.
Talking about Nitish’s recent alliance with RJD president Lalu Prasad, the leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly said Nitish had now joined hands with those forces against whom he had got the people’s mandate in the last Assembly elections.
“Nitish not only got a Mahadalit leader like Manjhi removed as the CM but also humiliated him,” he said.
Union Minister of State Ram Kripal Yadav said: “This has amply proved that Nitish himself is the Ravan of Bihar.”
The HAM said ‘Vibhishan Manjhi’ would finally set Nitish’s Lanka on fire. The party also called Lalu as Kumbhakarna, another brother of Ravan who was known for sleeping all the time.
“What else can you expect Laluji to be when he had joined forces with Nitish to help him in the polls?” a senior HAM leader said.
Sadhu floats party for clean governance
By Giridhar Jha in Patna
With the election bells ringing in Bihar, there seems no dearth of new parties joining the political race.
The latest to jump on the poll bandwagon is former Lok Sabha MP Sadhu Yadav, better known as the estranged brother-in-law of Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad.
Sadhu formally announced his party Garib Janata Dal-Secular in Patna.

“The people of Bihar want change in this election. Garib Janata Dal-Secular will be the alternative,” Sadhu affirmed.
Sadhu, who was known as a parallel power centre during the 15-year-long RJD regime in Bihar, said that Lalu and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had joined hands to halt the BJP’s march.
“But I have not come to stop anybody. I have merely come to provide an alternative to the voters in Bihar who want change,” Sadhu added.

“We will provide Rs 1 lakh to poor families for their daughters’ wedding,” he said.
Promising a clean government, Sadhu said that the people of the state wanted to get rid of Nitish and Lalu. Declaring the autorickshaw as his party’s symbol, Sadhu nominated former Rajya Sabha member Brahmadeo Anand Paswan as the party’s state president.
Paswan, incidentally, had shot into limelight for writing a poetic hagiography, Lalu Chalisa, in honour of the RJD president.
Sadhu is the second Yadav leader, after Pappu Yadav, to float a new party. Pappu had recently formed the Jan Adhikar Morcha. Both Sadhu and Pappu had earlier come out in open in support of former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi after his ouster by the Janata Dal-United. But they chose to form their parties rather than joining the Hindustani Awam Party floated by Manjhi. Both leaders, however, have pledged their support to Manjhi.
Sadhu had fallen out with Lalu shortly before the 2009 Lok Sabha polls after being denied the RJD ticket from East Champaran. He had then joined the Congress to fight the general elections.
Prior to the 2014 parliamentary polls, he had sung paeans of Narendra Modi. This, however, led to his expulsion from Congress.
Sadhu subsequently failed to join the BJP because of the protests by the party’s Bihar leaders such as Sushil Kumar Modi. Since then, Sadhu had been languishing in the political wilderness.
Chris Rock's 33-year-old girlfriend Megalyn Echikunwoke flashed a diamond ring on her wedding finger on Saturday evening while at the Apollo in the Hamptons 2016 party in New York City.
The timing is interesting as the next day the comedian finalized his divorce from wife of 20 years, Malaak Compton-Rock.
The ring - a yellow gold double band with a small diamond - could be an engagement ring. As PageSix revealed on Thursday, a friend shared a clear image of the ring and added it was time to celebrate 'new beginnings,' strongly suggesting the standup could be on his way to another marriage.
Bling it on! Chris Rock's girlfriend Megalyn Echikunwoke flashed diamond ring on wedding finger on Sunday the night before his divorce was finalized from wife of 10 years Malaak
'Last night we celebrated new beginnings . . . #lovewins,' the unidentified friend wrote in the caption.
The site pointed out Echikunwoke seemed to take a dig at Malaak when she replied 'Bye, Felicia,' which is a catchphrase that pretty much translates to 'don't let the door hit you on the way out,' only not as polite.
A friend added crying-laughter emojis.

The post was then taken down.
The beauty glowed as she held onto Rock, who was also in great spirits. She had on a lovely floral-print dress with spaghetti straps and her hair was worn down over her bare shoulders.

His rep then said Chris was '100 percent' not engaged.
On Monday Chris and Malaak both appeared in a New Jersey courtroom to finalise the split, reported TMZ.
The 51-year-old comic actor and his wife - who have been separated since 2014 -have two daughters Lola Simone, 14 and Zahra Savanna, 12.
Chris and Malaak Compton-Rock also appear to have been raising eight-year-old Ntombi, who first came to live with them from South Africa when she was six months old, according to the website, although details are unclear.
In divorce papers, Malaak listed Ntombi-futhi Samantha as a dependent along with the Rocks’ two biological daughters.

She stated that in addition to their two children, there is a child 'who has resided with the parties since before her first birthday.'
But rather mysteriously, a spokesman for Chris told TMZ he does not have an adopted child.
TMZ previously reported that back in 2008, the family took in Ntombi who remained in their house and was subsequently enrolled in a local school.

The site added that the girl's parents were thought to be unemployed and from South Africa, although it is not known why she was living with the Rock family.
They add that when Chris and Malaak began divorce proceedings, Chris maintained contact with his two biological daughters.
However their divorce case is sealed so it is not known what settlement was reached.
Meanwhile, Chris began dating actress Megalyn earlier this year. Megalyn, who has had recurring roles in 24, ER, CSI Miami, The 4400, 90210 and Damien, was most recently featured as the animal-powered Vixen in the TV series Arrow.
